Tiger Tales Literary
Competition Guidelines
Allegan
High School opens this competition to all Allegan High School students.
TIMELINE: The contest begins
Tuesday, December 5, 2006 and ends Friday,
February 2, 2007. Entries must be submitted no later than
2:45 PM to Mrs. Hascall in room #534.
FORMAT: Participants
in each category (short story, poetry, personal narrative essay, and formal
essay) should submit three copies of their manuscripts. Students may enter each category no
more than once. Manuscripts must
be typed in 12 point. Short
stories and essays must be double-spaced.
The authorŐs name may not appear on any copy.
CATEGORIES:
SHORT
STORY
LENGTH: Stories
should consist of approximately 2 – 20 typed, double- spaced pages and
may target adults, young adults, or children as their intended audience.
EVALUATION CRITERIA:

LENGTH: A
submission consists of a maximum of four (4) poems of any length.

LENGTH: A personal
narrative (informal essay) submission consists of approximately 1 to 8 typed,
double-spaced pages.

essay submission consists of approximately 1½ to 8 typed, double-spaced pages. If appropriate, a Works Cited page

Be creative with any medium. Consider this endeavorŐs title and purpose. Interested students should contact Mr.

*This portion of the contest is also open to graphic
artistry students at the Votech Center.
Three judges will evaluate entries in each category. The announcement of winners will occur
at the Allegan High School Literary Awards Reception, which will be held in the
AHS Media Center in late February.
In each category, at the discretion of the judges, three prizes will be
awarded: first place ($100); second place ($50); 3rd place
($25). Honorable mentions may be
recognized. Winning submissions
and honorable mentions will be published in Tiger Tales, a school-sponsored literary magazine. In addition, an open microphone
reception will coincide with the release of the Tiger Tales publication in April.
ADDITIONAL
NOTES:
All contest participants will be asked to sign a contract
indicating that their work is original and in no way plagiarized. Literary thieves will be dealt with
severely.
Submissions must be in good taste.
